Alabama

Alabama, one of the southern states along the Gulf of Mexico, a boundless in natural beautiful, finger-licking barbecue, and southern charm. Our time in Alabama was spent along the southern coastline, so our recommendations will only reflect that region.

Mobile

Mobile, Alabama is a lively and cultured port town located nearby the Gulf of Mexico. Know as the birthplace of Mardi Gras, head to the town in February through March each year to join the parade and festivities. At other times, you can enjoy the downtown area that includes a mix between southern charm and new age hipster.

Eateries/Drinkeries

The Velvet Pig - this eatery is located inside The Ice Box Bar. The food was top notch (a burger & fries and a brisket sandwich with cornbread) and the space had laid back vibes. There was an old pool table and a bumper pool table. It was friendly for all, even dogs!
Mo’ Bay Beignet Co. - made from scratch every day, a beignet is a must try while traveling in the south. It pairs perfectly with a house made coffee

Personal Note

Driving around the country, we’ve encountered many stray dogs, particularly Down South. We strive to stop for every stray animal that we see to provide food and water, and bring them to a safe location through the guidance of local humane societies.

The Friends of Mobile Animal Shelter is dedicated to improving the life of animals and reducing strays on the street. We adopted our pup Obie at this shelter.

The South has high rates of heartworm due the humid climate creating a breeding ground for mosquitos. Obie was heartworm positive when we adopted her. We worked out a treatment plan with a vet in California for $1,200. Heartworm can sound scary, but with proper intervention and monthly prevention pills, a once hearworm positive dog could live an long, active, and healthy life!
